Jubilee Year 2023 - 2024
2023 marks the anniversary of two significant moments in the parish’s history. It will be 175 years since the parish was founded in 1848, and it will be 50 years since the church was consecrated in 1973.
This Jubilee Year is important to us as it celebrates the things that make up the parish,
the people and the building.
175 years ago a group of Catholics gathered to found a new community in Prescot. They came together in faith as families, as friends, as individuals, as young and old, as new people and as established Prescotians. They created the parish of Our Lady Immaculate & St Joseph. They celebrated their faith and handed it on to the next generation, and the one after that, and the one after that. The community of believers they established is still coming together today, growing and vibrant as ever.
That early parish community commissioned the celebrated architect Joseph Hansom, to design them a church. In 1857, the new church was opened, a beautiful example of the Gothic Revival style. Here the community of Our Lady Immaculate & St Joseph gather to give worship to God. It is a place where God dwells among us, it is a house of prayer. The church building was formally consecrated in 1973, and continues to be a place of worship for the community.
As part of our jubilee celebrations we are raising money to have the church redecorated, to restore its beauty for the next generation. Anything you can give is greatly appreciated.
